Marriage isn’t a walk in the park. It’s a lot of work which doesn’t stop once you both say I do. The payoff is that you and your partner get to spend the rest of your lives and experience new experiences with each other. There are certain characteristics which are crucial for a Christian marriage to work. Let’s have a look at them.
1. God is first – Many people mistake putting their spouse over God. You must never make this mistake. When God is first, all other things fall into place.
2. It isn’t a 50-50 agreement – Marriage doesn’t work when you look at it as a 50-50 agreement. If you look at it like that, then your partner and you will always treat each other based on how the other person treats them. It’s about looking at the marriage as your sole responsibility. When you look at marriage like that, you have a better marriage.
4. Don’t live beyond your means – One of the most cited reasons for divorce is money issues. Don’t assume that an expensive gift will resolve any issues your partner and you have. Do your best to live within your means.
4. The past is the past, leave it there – In the heat of the moment, we can often lose ourselves and remember past issues with our spouses. However, you should make it a point to leave it where you found it, in the past. The past cannot be changed. However, you have the power to change the present as well as the future.
A Christian marriage is a fulfilling marriage. By following the path laid out by God, you are giving God, your partner and yourself the best gifts you can. Put your faith in God, and He will take care of the rest.
